Soaring Icons to be Honored

Carl and Jane Herold

Soaring Family, June 17th, 2017, at 10:00 PST, the Soaring Community of Northern Nevada/ Northern California will honor two of our own who have passed from our presence all too soon. The ceremony will take place at Air Sailing Gliderport (NV23) north of Reno/Sparks, Nevada in the Memorial Grove where we honor past Icons permanently in Granite.

Carl and Jane Herold both passed from us in 2016 within months of each other.

Jane Herold was born in Ohio in 1931 and was raised there. She met and married Carl in Ohio and started their family. It was in Ohio that Carl discovered Soaring and started pursuing the endeavor which, at times became an obsession. Jane became a Soaring wife, Super Crew and mom to (eventually) 4 kids. Carl joined Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in the 60’s and they all moved to Palo Alto, CA. There, Carl and a partner bought a Schleichter KA-6 and “it was on”. Jane drug 4 kids, kept peace in the family, chased Carl all over the Western United States in the family tow vehicle, and essentially raised a family on the road. Daughter Amy remembers many a piece of bread spread with apple butter for breakfast as they prepared for another day trek, chasing down dad.

Carl Herold innovated many things in the soaring world and gave materially and intellectually to the sport. He was several times SSA President, wrote technical pieces using his vast experiences to further the safety and enjoyment of others. One of his greatest obsessions was the evolving science of Wave Soaring, seriously dangerous stuff for the uninitiated. He helped develop the Minden Wave Camps, participated in regular Wave Camp All Day Safety Seminars and, of course flew many long-distance flights both with and without Wave. Carl was a tireless advocate for Air Sailing for many years. His mentorship of new cross country pilots during ASI camps established a foundation that continues today.

Please plan to come join us as we honor their lives with this ceremony. Refreshments and story sharing will happen immediately after the enshrinement.
