PASCO Region 11 Soaring Awards

PASCO Awards Overview

The Pacific Soaring Council (PASCO) presents two kinds of annual awards: Flight Awards and Merit or Recognition Awards.

Sawyer Award

 

PASCO Flight Awards:

PASCO Flight Awards are based on the "honor system". In order to qualify, the flight in question must be documented by a report sent to the appropriate PASCO designee (see WESTWIND or contact Awards Chairperson) by the date specified by the PASCO awards chairperson (normally early to mid-October). The pilot must be a PASCO member at the time the flight is submitted for consideration. All flights must confirm to FAA regulations.

Longest Straight Out Distance

Will be awarded annually to the pilot and crew who had the longest straight Out flight (as measured from takeoff or release, to landing or furthest point).

PASCO Longest Distance Award

A perpetual trophy presented to the annual winner. If the recipient lives outside Region 11, the trophy will remain in the custody of the Awards Chairperson until the following year. All entries to qualify must be submitted in writing with pertinent details to the Awards Chairperson.

  1. Must originate in Region 11, but may terminate anywhere, and turnpoints outside Region 11 are allowed.
  2. Starting in 2019 - Based on OLC points instead of 3 Turnpoint distance.
  3. Limited to 2 wins per pilot.

PASCO Longest Silver Distance Award

An engraved "keeper" cup, mug or trophy presented to the annual winner.

  1. Longest distance flight by PASCO member qualifying for F.A.I. Silver Badge.
  2. Must originate in Region 11.
  3. Claim must be for Silver Distance only (Silver Distance plus Altitude or Duration claims are allowed).
  4. Flight must be reported in or before the October issue of Soaring for that year.
  5. No handicap applied.

Region 11 Championship Awards

A perpetual trophy presented to the annual winner of an SSA Sanctioned Regional Championship held in Region 11. If there are more than one sanctioned Regional in a given year, the trophies go to winners of PASO sponsored events. If the recipient lives outside Region 11, the trophy will remain in the custody of the Awards Chairperson until the following year.

  3. Standard Class
  4. 18M Class (& Motorglider)
  5. Sports Class

Air Sailing Sports Class Contest

Administered and presented by Air Sailing, Inc. An SSA-sanctioned regional Sports Class contest held at Air Sailing Gliderport.

PASCO Sawyer Award

Flights beginning in Region 11. Posted on OLC. The OLC year is from October to October. PASCO will adhere to the OLC year.

PASCO Merit & Recognition Awards

Les Arnold Service Award

First presented to Les Arnold in 1977 for his many years of untiring devotion to the sport of soaring. The award will be presented annually, or from time to time, by the PASCO Board of Directors to someone who has exhibited the "Les Arnold Spirit" in the effort to improve the quality of the sport in Region 11.

PASCO Exceptional Service Award

Presented annually by the PASCO Board of Directors to a PASCO member who in the preceding year has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of soaring in Region 11.

Sergio Mentoring Award - NEW starting in 2018

  1. New perpetual trophy
  2. Will be awarded annually based on number of nominations. The pilot receiving the highest number of nominations will win the award.
  3. Mentoring is not limited to mentoring flights. Any type of mentoring will be considered

Safety Service Award

New in 2012, this award be presented annually, or from time to time, by the Board of Directors to a PASCO member who in the preceding year has made a significant contribution to the safety of the sport of soaring in Region 11 or country wide.
In particular, The PASCO Safety Award will be presented to the member who has contributed most significantly to stepping up the overall safety protocols all across Region 11, or any other innovation that helps safety.
